Seattle grunge icons Nirvana formed in 1987, consisting of drummer Dave Grohl (who went on to front the hugely successful Foo Fighters), bassist Krist Novoselic and tragic frontman Kurt Cobain. According to writing by Kurt, he never wanted to be famous, but their unique sound and the thriving underground scene at the time pushed them to the forefront of alternative music and by 1991 they released their hugely successful album, Nevermind.
Cobain was the band’s songwriter, and his searing lyrics coupled with melancholic chords, found a place in the hearts of many tortured youths. The lyrics were political, giving voice to the outsiders and the music had a raw energy that wasn’t heard in the charts at the time.
There’s no doubt that the band’s biggest hit is “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” - it’s both a pop and rock anthem at the same time, and the opening riff is one of the most recognizable of all time.
However, the song is much more than the sum of its part as studies have discovered. Dr. Mick Grierson, a musician and computer scientist who works with Goldsmiths University of London, explained how the song has gained its status, and retains it with new listeners, even 30 years on.
Grierson analyzed 50 songs that have been repeatedly listed as “best songs” by fans, music labels, magazines, and blogs. He sought any similarities and then their differences. Using analytical software, he studied the key, timbral variety, chordal variety, beats per minute, lyrical content and sonic variety to see what exactly made audiences love these songs so much.
The songs that had made these lists were considered more varied and dynamic than other mainstream songs at the time. This makes the songs more captivating and excites the listener. The way “Smells Like Teen Spirit” follows a format, yet differs sonically (partly due to Cobain’s raspy voice) makes it stand out. This is what has made it so iconic over time.
